When it comes to Mardi Gras treats that boast sweet color, we've got your colorful cookie recipe right here.
Colorful Twist Sugar Cookies
2 ¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 cup of softened unsalted butter
1 ¾ cup sugar
3 ½ tsp vanilla extract
In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
In a mixer, combine softened butter and sugar on medium speed for about 5 minutes.
Turn the mixer to low and add the eggs and vanilla extract. Continue on low speed until combined.
With a rubber spatula, slowly add the flour mixture to the butter mixture a little bit at a time, mixing throughout.
Stir until well combined and store in the fridge for an hour.
Divide your cold dough into equal parts for food coloring. (if you want two colors you divide the dough in two, we made our cookies four colors, so we divided them into 4 equal parts).
Roll out each ball of dough and add food coloring (5-10 drops for regular food coloring, may vary if using gel food coloring).
Roll the dough back up and knead the dough to mix in the food coloring. Roll the dough flat again to add more food coloring. Continue this process as needed.
Continue adding different color dye to each dough ball.
When all dough is colored, place them in the fridge for an hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Take the dough out of the fridge and line a cookie sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
Pinch a small amount from each colored dough ball and combine into a small (about 1 inch) ball.
Roll each colorful ball into a long tube (about 6 inches) and then roll the tubes into a spiral.
Optional: once rolled into a spiral, roll the edges in sprinkles for even more colorful fun!
Place cookies on lined cookie sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees.
Let them cool 5-10 minutes
